Duties:

The Commission on the Status of Women shall assess and evaluate the needs and issues of women in the City in order to inform and advise the City Council, City departments and sections, and other community agencies and organizations of those needs and issues; recommend programs or legislation to the City Council to promote and ensure equal rights and opportunities to and for women in the City; to promote education on issues regarding matters involving the needs of women and to prepare and disseminate such information; provide outreach information and education that empowers women to achieve self-sufficiency and self-esteem; maintain an active liaison with groups, organizations, agencies and individuals in regard to issues related to women; perform other duties as may be imposed upon the Commission by the City Council by ordinance or resolution.
Membership:
The Commission on the Status of Women consists of five voting members who serve a maximum of two (2) consecutive terms. Members appointed to the commission in October or November 2009 may serve up to two (2) additional four-year terms after their initial terms, subject to the provisions of Chapter 2.36.

The term of office for each member of the commission is four (4) years or until his/her successor is appointed and qualified. The term of each member is coterminous with the councilmember that nominates that member to the commission regardless of when nominated and appointed. At the initial appointment of the members in October and November 2009, the appointments are coterminous with the term of the councilmember that nominated that member to commission.

Two (2) student ex officio non-voting members serve one year terms and are appointed by the commission.

Qualifications:
The five (5) members of the commission on the status of women shall be electors of the City of Glendale at the time of their appointment and during incumbency. The two (2) student ex officio members shall be students at the high school level or above. The five (5) members of the commission shall be individuals who have exhibited leadership qualities in the community or other activities relating to the general welfare of women.

The Management Services Department provides administrative support for the Commission on the Status of Women. The Assistant to the City Manager and the Administrative Associate can provide further information concerning Commission issues.
