MAJOR PRE-PLANNED EVENTS
Michael Jackson Funeral Services at Forest Lawn Memorial Park - September 3, 2009:
At approximately 7 p.m. funeral services for Michael Jackson were held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the City of Glendale, California.
Representatives of Forest Lawn, working with the Jackson Family submitted a permit for city services, to include police staffing, road closures and support from other city departments. Expenses associated with city services were the responsibility of the permit holder.
The Glendale Police Department and Traffic Engineers developed a plan to close Glendale Avenue between Los Feliz and San Fernando Road for a period of time. All other streets that join with Glendale Avenue within the closure had restricted entry for residents only.
"Our city departments are very capable and responsive to these types of events," said Mayor Frank Quintero of the City of Glendale. The Jackson family should expect to have a private and peaceful service. I am sure the Michael Jackson's fans will understand this is private time for the family to mourn."
The Jackson family had announced that this was to be a "private ceremony" and "would be limited to family and close friends." Forest Lawn officials had indicated that the facility would be closed the night before and will not reopen until the Jackson services are finished. Through meetings with Forest Lawn officials representing the family, the street closures assisted in accommodating the media off park property. The closures also assisted in the public safety aspect in an effort to mitigate any impact on nearby businesses, residential areas, emergency ingress or egress. To that end, the Glendale Police Department strongly discouraged anyone who was not invited, not to come to Forest Lawn Memorial Park on that day.
The Glendale Police Department, in collaboration with other city departments, balanced the public safety needs of the community, while carrying out the wishes of the family and Forest Lawn Memorial Park through the permit process. Many thanks to Public Works, Fire and Parks Departments.
With many city officials working together, the pre-planned event was successful. Forest Lawn paid the city of Glendale for all services rendered.
Media outlets from around the world came to Glendale, California. 460 media personnel were credentialed to cover the event.
