Don’t Let Alcohol Force You Out of the Game
Be sure to include a designated driver in your starting lineup this weekend

[Los Angeles, CA] – The Avoid the 100 – Los Angeles County DUI Campaign is reminding football fans watching this year’s Super Bowl game with friends and family to make the right decision before kickoff and game plan in a designated sober driver. Law Enforcement joins with the national “Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk” message from the National Football League (NFL), the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management (TEAM) Coalition.

The Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force will be deploying special roving DUI patrols on Sunday, February 5th in several communities throughout the area looking to stop and arrest drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs. These DUI patrols are, in addition to regularly scheduled patrol officers, all looking for the tale-tell signs of an intoxicated driver behind the wheel.

In 2010, over 10,000 people were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. In California, this deadly crime led to 791 deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver.

“We’re reminding everyone that real Super Bowl Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk,” said Glendora Police Chief, Rob Castro. “We are asking all party hosts and bar owners to take extra care of designated sober drivers this year. Drafting a designated driver this weekend will be the correct play call for a sure win.”

The Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk message supports the league-wide designated-driver campaign called Responsibility Has Its Rewards. Celebrating its ninth season in 2011, the campaign encourages fans to participate in designated-driver programs supported by beer and concessionaire companies at every NFL stadium nationwide. The Responsibility Has Its Rewards Super Bowl XLVI winners were randomly selected Designated Drivers for the Season from the AFC Champion and NFC Champion teams. They attend the 2012 Pro Bowl in Honolulu, HI. Rewarding responsible behavior is just as important to the Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk safety message as reminding fans about the risks of drinking and driving.

“We want everyone to make the right decision on Super Bowl Sunday,” said Chris Murphy, Director of the Californian Office of Traffic Safety. “Having a designated sober driver should be an obvious call in everyone’s play book. Making sure designated sober drivers know how much we appreciate their responsible decision is what will make this year’s celebration extra special – and extra safe.”

“This weekend, the Glendale Police Department will be as vigilant as their law enforcement partners across the State in deterring drunk driving,” said Glendale Police Chief Ron De Pompa. “The potential for injury or death exponentially increases when drugs or alcohol are involved.”

The Avoid DUI Patrols are funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety who reminds everyone to please; Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1!

If you are hosting a Super Bowl XLVI Party:
    • Make sure all of your guests designate their sober drivers before kick-off or help arrange ride-sharing with other sober drivers
    • Find unique ways to recognize the designated drivers at your party
    • Give them a great spot to watch the game
    • Whatever non-alcoholic beverage they are drinking, make sure their glass is always full
    • Let them have the first pass at the buffet table
    • Make sure their cars are easy to access when it is time to start driving people home
    • Serve plenty of food
    • Offer a variety of non-alcoholic choices like non-alcohol beers, soft drinks, juice, and water
    • Serve one drink at a time and serve measured drinks
    • Only serve alcohol to guests over 21 years of age
    • Determine ahead of time when you’ll stop serving alcohol, such as one hour before the end of the party or at the end of the third quarter of the game (just like NFL stadiums) and begin serving coffee and dessert
    • Add the numbers of local cab companies into your phone so they are just one touch away
    • Take appropriate steps to prevent anyone from driving while impaired
    • Be prepared for guests to spend the night if an alternative way home is not available

If you are attending a Super Bowl party or watching at a sports bar or restaurant:
    • Designate your sober driver before the party begins and leave your car keys at home if you plan to drink
    • Find unique ways to recognize the designated drivers when you are out at a bar or restaurant
    • Offer to be the designated driver the next time you go out
    • Cover the cost for parking or even pay for a tank of gas
    • Whatever non-alcoholic beverage they are drinking, make sure their glass is always full
    • Pick up the tab for their food and drink
Before you go out, add the numbers for local cab companies in your cell phone so if you find yourself in need of a ride, it is just one touch away
Avoid drinking too much alcohol too fast. Pace yourself—eat enough food, take breaks and alternate with non-alcoholic drinks.
Take appropriate steps to prevent anyone from driving while impaired. Remember, Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.
Always buckle up – it’s your best defense on the road

  • The Glendale Police Department is proud to release the 2011 crime statistics showing an overall reduction in both Part 1 and Part 2 crimes. Part 1 crimes, reported to the FBI, are comprised of eight specific crime types used to make jurisdictional comparisons. They include the violent crime categories of homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault; and the property crime categories of burglary, auto theft, larceny, and arson. Part 1 crimes for 2011 were down a total of 7%, ensuring that Glendale remains in the top 10 “Safest Cities” in California with a population of 100,000 or more. The Police Department was very pleased to see an overall 6% reduction specifically in the violent crime categories, which was highlighted by a notable 9% drop in reported robberies.

2011 Part 1 property crimes revealed a 7% decrease from the previous year. Burglaries were reduced by 3% and auto burglaries by 12%. Auto theft was down 2%, although petty theft saw a slight increase of 4%. However, the most significant decrease in property crime was realized in the “Grand Theft” category; a total of 201 fewer reports than 2010 which equates to a 41% reduction.

Additionally, all other crime categories not included under Part 1 (identified as Part 2 crimes) were down a total of 17% for the same time period. Of special note is the progress made in addressing the emerging crime trend of “identity theft.” In recent years, Glendale had experienced a rise in identity theft crimes. However, there was a 17% decrease noted in 2010 and an even more impressive decrease of 49% in 2011. The Glendale Police Department has made a concerted effort to aggressively investigate these crimes, joining our state and federal law enforcement partners in brining these violators to justice. Additionally, we have invested time and resources in a public education campaign to help community members protect themselves from falling victim to identity theft.

Other special crime categories that had notable reductions in 2011 included domestic violence, down 8%, and vandalism (including graffiti), down 12%. Area command policing strategies have been effective in these areas that are traditionally difficult to address with standard policing responses.

Despite the loss of 18 sworn positions over the last several years of the economic recession, the Glendale Police Department has continued to effectively fight crime in the community by utilizing several key strategies. These concepts have included an “Area Command” reorganization of the Department; the development of a robust crime analysis system entitled “iLEAD”; the employment of a variety of enabling technologies, such as video surveillance and automatic license plate readers; and the building of effective partnerships with the community, utilizing the formation of neighborhood watch groups and area command “town hall” meetings.

“I am very proud of what we have been able to do this past year for the city of Glendale and although we have employed several strategies to make the department efficient, building partnerships with our diverse community has been key to our success,” said Chief Ron De Pompa. “We have made great strides in diversifying our Department through our recruitment efforts, allowing us to connect better with our community.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 18, 2012

    Glendale Police Department Targets
    Impaired Drivers with DUI Checkpoint

The Glendale Police Department will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on January 21, 2012. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail time, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, court probation and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. “Over the course of the past year, DUI collisions have claimed no lives but have resulted in 108 wrecks, injuring 29 of our friends and neighbors in Glendale,” said Chief Ron De Pompa.

This DUI checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as insuring that drivers have a valid driver’s license. A major component of these checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding a considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.

Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
